The 1988 BMW M5

Only 2,241 E28 châssis M5 Sedans were produced, each one painstakingly hand-assembled by the elite "M" Motorsports division of BMW. The E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world upon introduction, and the car was heralded as an instant classic by the international motoring press. Dinan Engineering

Over the past 25 years, through hard work and obsessive research & development, Dinan Engineering has earned the right to be nationally renowned as the state-of-the art when it comes to "no compromises" performance enhancement of BMW automobiles. The 1988 Dinan M5 Turbo

Depending on whom you ask, a mere 5 to 10 examples of the Dinan BMW M5 Turbo were ever created by Dinan Engineering in Morgan Hill, CA. Each of these cars offered an extreme degree of acceleration and vehicle dynamics on par with the most expensive and exotic hand produced supercars of the day. Equally impressively, the explosive power and velcro-like road-holding capabilities of the Dinan M5 Turbo were married with an astonishing degree of civility and comfort. Brought together within the parameters of BMW's superb e28 M5 châssis, an incomparable, unbeatable machine was created. About THIS 1988 BMW Dinan M5 Turbo

I will submit to you that the vehicle offered here (VIN # WBSDC9309J2791622) is without a doubt one of the finest remaining BMW E28 Dinan M5 Turbo sedans in existence today. This original California car has only 60,500 meticulously documented miles on the châssis (an average of approximately 3,500 miles per year) and has never been in an accident. This fact is supported by a clean CarFax report, by the fact that all OEM body panel VIN tags are in place, and by careful visual inspection. The engine of this car has only 2,000 miles on it, most of them administered by the builder during careful break-in.

In 1989, this BMW M5 was brought by its original owner to Dinan Engineering in Morgan Hill, CA. Here, it was transformed into a Dinan M5 Turbo as specified at the above link. Since then, the car has lived in California, Texas and Florida, always in dry, warm climates. The car has always been well cared for and, as mentioned above, has been very lightly driven over the years. The original owner owned the car since the late '90's.

Last year, the decision was made to have the engine completely "gone through." The car was running fine at the time, but sometimes one just can't resist the attraction of "more" and "better." The car was transported from the San Francisco Bay Area to Frank Fahey Motorsports in San Diego for a "no expenses spared" blueprinted engine build using the original block. The logical first question that the enthusiast might ask here is "why didn't the car go back to Dinan Engineering for this work?" The answer is twofold: First, Dinan Engineering has, regrettably, made it clear that they have no interest in working on older cars, even cars that they originally built. This has been a bit of a disappointment to enthusiast owners of original Dinan cars but, at the end of the day, this is their business decision. Second, Frank Fahey is known to be the ultimate when it comes to the building of bullet-proof and awesomely powerful M-Engines. His many M-Masterpieces include a stunning M1 Procar replica and an E30 M3 powered by a modified E34 M5 engine, both which have been featured in Bimmer Magazine and many other BMW specialty publications. While Fahey's work is not for the "faint of wallet," it is known for being without parallel when it comes to durability, workmanship, and horsepower. For more information on Frank Fahey Motorsports, please check out the following link: http:///www.frankfaheymotorsports.com

Frank Fahey took a unique approach to this car in the sense that he was determined to pick up where Dinan Engineering had left off and to build stronger and better from there. He accomplished this goal for two reasons: First because he had the benefit of modern hardware and technology that was simply not available when Dinan built the car; Second, because Frank is an engine builder with an unmatched obsession to detail and precision. Everything that Fahey incorporates into his engines is tested, measured, tested again and refined until it is proven and perfect. Fahey chose the absolute best of the best in hardware in building this balanced and blueprinted engine which resulted in a final bill of $27,000.00. The complete bill is available to all serious biddrs/buyers, as are all other repair orders and extensive documentation..

To begin, upon engine tear down, all internals and parts were micrometer measured. To prep the engine, all casting burrs and passages were precision ground and all threads were chased. After being carefully cleaned and prepped, the block was Rust-Oleum sealed inside and out and the exterior was epoxy coated.

The cylinder head of the car is a brand new casting with all brand new valvetrain and internals. The cost for the cylinder head alone was $5,610.00 while the cost for the brand new S38B35 valve set was $1,495.00. The cylinder head itself received the full Frank Fahey treatment which included extensive porting and polishing. Brand new throttle bodies were bored and port matched to the new cylinder head. Moving down to the block, all new gaskets and bearings (main, rod, etc.) were of course installed, along with Pauter billet connecting rods and forged JE pistons. A new blueprinted oil pump was installed, along with new oil pump chain and sprocket, new water pump, new thermostat and new freeze plugs. The crank shaft was micropolished and cleaned and the piston rings were file fit to the cylinder bore. All aluminum parts were cleaned, bead-blasted and clear-coated.

Output Specs, supported by Frank Fahey's Dynamometer testing: 365 rear wheel HP (approx 450 flywheel HP)at 5400 rpms; 380 ft-lbs torque at 4400 rpms. Most impressive is the fact that Fahey accomplished this with a very mild 7.5 lbs of boost. The scary thought is that this engine is capable of putting out well over 600hp with increased boost, more radical camshafts, a bigger turbo and a few other modifications. However, the beauty of the engine’s current state of tune is the fact that it is relatively unstressed given the low boost levels, thus ensuring many miles of reliability and performance. By comparison, the original Dinan turbo conversion required 12.5 ft-lbs to accomplish 462 flywheel HP. Fahey accomplished this result with higher grade hardware, extensive headwork and superior engine management technology (obviously much has been learned in the last 16 years in this department).

The driving experience of this car is simply amazing. The car idles beautifully. When you want to drive in a normal and civilized manner, the car behaves impeccably and runs extremely smoothly. However, when you are ready to move out, the linear surge of power is ridiculously strong and arrives almost immediately, with very little turbo lag. As mentioned above, the engine and clutch of this car have been used only 2,000 careful miles, the majority driven by Frank Fahey during the painstaking break-in procédure.

This car is in superb condition, inside and out. The paint is gorgeous and very glossy and the body is straight and free of dents, rust or scratches. All glass and rubber is near perfect. In the interior, the carpets, headliner and dash are near perfect. The front seats are brand new Recaros. The door panels and rear seat are fully intact with no tears or cracks. The engine compartment and trunk are extremely clean.
