Acceleration 0-125 mph

The time the car needs to accelerate is not quite correct as the road is leading uphill a bit. Gearshifts occur as follows: into 2nd gear at 31 mph (50 kph) and 5700 rpm into 3rd gear at 56 mph (90 kph) and 5700 rpm into 4th gear at 87 mph (140 kph) and 5700 rpm into 5th gear at 125 mph (200 kph) and 6000 rpm When accelerating beyond 125 mph (200 kph) it would be better to shift into 5th gear at 5700 rpm (118 mph, 190 kph). However, if 125 mph are enough, I think it is faster to reach that speed in 4th without the additional gearshift.

Acceleration/deceleration 0-62-0 mph

The acceleration may seem a little low in the MPEG, but this is no blast off where the rev counter is at 4000 rpm. That makes the clutch happy. But nevertheless a time well below 10 seconds is a great time. You can see how strong the g-forces are when looking at the keys in the ignition. When braking they are almost horizontal.

25 miles on the Autobahn 2

By the end of october 2001 it has been approved: a speed limit on large stretches of the Autobahn 2 between Hannover and Berlin. Because of the vast number of trucks that are congesting at least two of its three lanes on weekdays, there is now a speed limit of 120 kph (75 mph). So the last big german Autobahn has been cut back to normal. On the whole world you were able only there to go hundreds of kilometers at full throttle on a sunday morning and cover the 170 miles (270 km) between Hannover and Berlin in about an hour - given a suitable car, of course. This video shows a 40 kilometer (25 mile) stretch of the A2. That distance is covered in just nine and a half minutes.

303 kph, 188 mph, Mach 0.25

In order to reach the speed shown in the clip a downhill streath is necessary. Because the CSi engine's power peak is at 5300 rpm (260kph/160mph) and engine power drops after that, it is impossible to go beyond 290kph / 180mph on a level surface, as can be seen in the video.

The speed of 303kph / 188mph equals 84m/sec or 92yards/sec, that's Mach 0.25 - one quarter the speed of sound. At that speed 5.05 kilometers (3.14 miles) are covered per minute. The stopping distance would be about 350m / 380 yards and means that after over 310 meters / 340 yards of emergency braking the car still has a velocity of over 100 kph / 62 mph. Those speeds should therefore only be driven on really empty stretches of Autobahn. The instataneous fuel consumption at that speed is 41 l/100km, that's 6.9 mpg (UK) or 5.7 mpg (US).

  • 41 l/100km @ 300 kph = 2.07 l/min = 29 sec/l
  • 41 l/100km @ 300 kph = 6.9 mpg (UK) = 0.46 gal/min = 131 sec/gal
  • 41 l/100km @ 300 kph = 5.7 mpg (US) = 0.55 gal/min = 110 sec/gal
